Sunset over Oia, Santorini, Greece - photography by Adam Gormley

Greece: Sunsets, Ruins and Island Blues

Greece is one of those places that never runs out of things to point a camera at. Ancient temples, whitewashed villages, impossibly blue water and some of the best sunsets I have ever seen. Here are the spots that gave me the most joy behind the lens.

Santorini is the one everyone pictures, and it lives up to it. The village of Oia sits right on the rim of a flooded volcanic crater, with blue domes and white walls stacked up the cliff face. The sunset is famous for a reason, but so are the crowds, so get there early and claim your spot. My tip: stay on after the sun goes down. Once the crowds drift away the village lights come on and the caldera is quiet and beautiful. And if your legs are up for it, take the steps down to Ammoudi Bay for fishing boats, clear water and a seafood lunch by the sea.

Mykonos is all about wandering. The laneways of Mykonos Town were said to be built to confuse pirates, and they will happily confuse you too. Every corner has another blue shutter, red door or splash of bougainvillea. Finish the day at the windmills of Kato Mili or the waterfront at Little Venice for the evening glow.

Athens is history at every turn. Watching the sun set on the Acropolis and the Parthenon is something I will never forget, and the Temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora is one of the best-preserved temples anywhere. Don't miss the changing of the guard at Syntagma Square, and spend some time in Monastiraki, where ancient ruins and modern street art sit side by side. Just out of town, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is a magic sunset spot right on the cliffs.

Delphi and Meteora take you inland, and for me this was the highlight. Delphi sits high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, where the ancient Greeks believed the centre of the world lay. Then there is Meteora, with monasteries perched on top of giant sandstone pillars. Stay for sunset when the sky turns purple and gold. It is truly one of the most extraordinary places I have photographed.

Out west, Corfu is perfect for early risers. The morning light on the Old Fortress and the harbour is beautiful, and you can swim with the locals off the rocks at Faliraki. Further south, Zakynthos has the famous shipwreck at Navagio Beach, reachable only by boat and worth every minute of the trip.

If you go, get off the beaten track, chase the early and late light and give yourself time to just sit and watch. Most of all get out there and enjoy it!!!
