Castel Sant'Angelo

Castel Sant'Angelo

"Castel Sant'Angelo"

Also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian

Rome, Lazio, Italy

Castel Sant'Angelo began life in the 2nd century AD as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian. Over the centuries it became a fortress, a prison and a refuge for popes, linked to the Vatican by a fortified passage.

The castle stands on the banks of the Tiber, facing the Ponte Sant'Angelo with its line of Baroque angel statues. It's one of the most striking silhouettes on the Roman skyline.

A striking architectural print, rich with nearly 1,900 years of history.
